Thousands of liters of diesel are running out

A freight train has derailed at Lahnstein in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the middle of the station, several tank cars were overturned. The residents had to leave their homes.

In Niederlahnstein, near Koblenz, thousands of liters of biodiesel leak after a train accident. On Sunday night, a freight train derailed for reasons that were not yet clear. The last eight tank cars have overturned and are leaking, as a spokeswoman for the Koblenz Federal Police told t-online.de. According to the first information, no one was injured.

The Niederlahnstein fire brigade and surrounding fire brigades as well as the THW moved in with 120 helpers. The plan was to pump the contents of the overturned wagons into other wagons after the airline was grounded. According to the Federal Police, the train consisted of a locomotive and 19 wagons.

Overturned wagons filled up to 60,000 liters

At first there was information that the locomotive and five cars had overturned. Each of the tank cars has a volume of up to 87,000 liters. The overturned wagons are filled with up to 60,000 liters. Biodiesel is classified as slightly hazardous for water and, in the event of leaks, it is less polluting than conventional diesel.

The train was going from Rotterdam to Basel. The railway line between Koblenz and Bad Ems has been closed, train traffic is affected, as announced by Deutsche Bahn.
