meInvestigators have managed to identify a murder victim who was discovered 23 years ago in a disused gravel pit in the Lower Rhine. The dead man was discovered on 8 December 1996 in Rheurdt, in the district of Kleve, on the L 140. The decisive indication of his identity came from the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY … unsolved”.

Since 1996, the police have been investigating the murder of “Sandkuhle”. The man who was reportedly killed had been lying in the well for some time. The researchers got nowhere by offering a 3,000 D-Mark reward at the time. The case became the so-called “cold case”.

With new technology from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office, it was possible last year to create realistic ghost images of the dead, according to police. They show the murder victim as he might have been at the time of the crime in December 1996.

After the case, including the ghost photo, was published in August 2019 in “Aktenzeichen XY”, investigators had received information. The decisive clue led them to Aachen.

Investigators are now searching for his killer in the area around Aachen where he was killed. Next Wednesday, the Aachen police and prosecutor will release more details of the case.

In 1996, there were hints that the man might have come from Poland or another Eastern European country. However, all investigations at that time, including those conducted abroad, were unsuccessful.

The man was described as 35 to 50 years old, standing around 1.70 meters tall, with slightly curly hair and a medium blonde mustache. There was a larger, older scar on the lower right leg.
