Wuppertal: bridge collapses on railway line – long-distance traffic must be diverted

The fall of a dilapidated bridge on a busy railway line in Wuppertal will affect rail traffic even during the weekend. Solingen, Wuppertal and Hagen currently do not have long-distance trains, a railway spokeswoman in Düsseldorf said on Friday. Long-distance traffic will be diverted through the Ruhr area.

The bridge should be demolished. The demolition went awry Friday night, when elements of the bridge could not be lifted with a heavy-duty crane as planned, but fell en route. “I find it quite annoying because the main line is now closed,” Wuppertal Mayor Andreas Mucke (SPD) told WDR. It is important that the railroad is cleared quickly.

Repair work continues through the weekend

In the early afternoon, the city announced that parts of the crashed beam had been removed. Now you have to remove the remaining parts of the bridge that have not collapsed. Only then could the railway investigate the damage to the track bed and the overhead line. It depends on when the first trains can run again.

Train commuters would have to be prepared for trouble even on the weekend when passing through Wuppertal, the train warned. The bridge not only brought down the overhead line, but also damaged its supports, the so-called support structure. The work was expected to drag on over the weekend.
