No more quarantine: more relaxation to enter Germany

Anyone traveling to Germany from other European countries will no longer have to go into domestic quarantine. Federal and state governments agree on this. NRW Prime Minister Laschet sees this as a “clear message to neighboring countries.”

Quarantine regulations for entering Germany are weakening. Anyone entering or returning to Germany from the EU and Schengen countries, as well as Britain, will no longer have to go through a 14-day domestic quarantine, as announced by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. The federal government and states would have agreed to this. The new regulation will be implemented in the coming days. North Rhine-Westphalia is already implementing the changes as of Friday.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer also announced that she wanted to implement the relaxation. The quarantine obligation only applies “to immigrants from third countries”. In light of ongoing border controls in France, for example, SPD policy said it wanted to work to ensure that there would be further opening steps soon until normality returns to normal, while observing the infection process.

Due to the crown pandemic, a quarantine obligation applies to citizens of Germany and foreigners entering Germany on April 9. After crossing the border, they have to drive directly to their accommodation and remain isolated for 14 days to check if they are infected with the coronavirus. Exceptions to the quarantine obligation include travelers, seasonal workers, and police and health authorities.

Seehofer had recommended

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet said the new regulation that has now been adopted creates legal clarity and is a great relief to people, especially in the border regions. “We are also sending a clear message to our neighboring countries on the way back to European normality.” Germany would only overcome the crown crisis “if European freedom of movement for people, goods and services were fully restored.”

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer had recommended that federal states loosen quarantine rules that had previously been applied and only apply to people who had previously been in third countries. For example, no longer for Germans arriving from France or the Netherlands. The decision on quarantine rules rests solely with the federal states.
