Above all, it’s about the rule that a driving ban is now in jeopardy for a month if you drive 21 km / h too fast in urban areas or 26 km / h outside the city. This regulation is “disproportionate,” said the ministry. This causes great enthusiasm among drivers. Reference was made, for example, to a petition entitled “Undo the StVO Amendment Driving License Case”, which has more than 135,000 supporters.

With a change, acceptance among citizens and the “sense of justice” must be restored. However, what was planned in detail was open. However, the ministry had already approached the federal states to obtain the necessary approval for its implementation.

Changes to traffic regulations went into effect in late April. In February, the Federal Council tightened Scheuer’s bill on many points, including the rule on driving bans for speeders. However, Scheuer had put the amended regulation into effect; the alternative would have been to withdraw it entirely.

Cyclists in particular are better protected

The focus of the new traffic regulations is actually better protection for cyclists, especially in cities. Among other things, cars are no longer allowed to stop on the bike’s protective strips; Before, it was only allowed to park there, but it was allowed to stop. A minimum distance of 1.50 meters in urban areas and two meters outside the city has been mandatory to overtake cyclists since April 28. Trucks over 3.5 tons have to travel at a passing pace when turning right in urban areas if bicycle or pedestrian traffic is expected.

In addition, there are numerous restrictions in the catalog of fines, such as the imminent prohibition to drive from 21 km / h above the allowed speed, a penalty of 80 euros and a point in the record of suitability to drive. Until now, driving licenses could only be withdrawn in the event of a single violation of 31 km / h in the city and 41 km / h abroad.

Driving too fast with the shift also became more expensive. In cities and outside the city, possible fines double up to the 20 km / h mark. Up to 10 km / h too fast now threaten 30 euros in urban areas, up to 15 km / h 50 euros and up to 20 km / h 70 euros. Everything remains as is. Outside of locations, it now costs 20, 40 and 60 euros.

In addition to the ADAC car club, the FDP and AfD in particular had criticized some of the new rules as unbalanced or excessive. However, another adjustment was well received by almost everyone: anyone who drives without authorization in a transit lane through an emergency lane for emergency vehicles can be punished with a fine of up to 320 euros, a one-month ban on drive and two points. Until now, such a sentence has only been threatened if drivers have not made room for an emergency lane.
