In the US state of Kentucky, police officers are said to have shot a 26-year-old African American in his apartment. The case occurred in Louisville on March 13. Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, however, only released the case on Monday after being commissioned by the family of the deceased. The family has filed a lawsuit against officials.
Breonna Taylor and her boyfriend were sleeping in their apartment, according to the lawyer, when police entered for a suspect. In a narcotics case, officers searched for a man who no longer lived in the building and was already in custody.
Taylor’s friend Kenneth Walker’s attorney said police had not announced themselves upon entering the apartment. Walker, who has a gun license, thought she was a thief and shot him in self-defense. Police, in turn, said they opened fire because an officer was shot and wounded in the apartment.
“Breonna Taylor was shot by the police at least eight times and died as a result,” said the police complaint: “Breonna had not posed a threat to the police and had done nothing to justify death by her hand.” Police have so far not commented on the case, referring to internal investigations.
Walker is in custody
Taylor’s friend Walker was arrested for attempted murder. He is still in custody to this day. According to Crump, no action has yet been taken against the police. Police have not commented on the circumstances of “this tragedy,” nor have they taken responsibility for Taylor’s “senseless murder,” Crump said.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Tuesday: “My priority is to spread the truth and justice.” The case is currently under investigation. However, he noted that “incredibly difficult situations” could arise during police work. Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Taylor’s murder two months ago “and nothing has happened since then.”
