Two stars stir, Reus fails

Of all things, with the district derby between Dortmund and Schalke, the Bundesliga starts on Saturday after Corona’s break. BVB is concerned about injuries. It gets tight with two key players.

Borussia Dortmund will resume Bundesliga game operations after a weak replacement weekend. Of all the places in the district derby scheduled for Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against FC Schalke 04, international Marco Reus, who has been out of action since early February, will be out of action. Axel Witsel and Emre also can’t threaten to get in shape on time.

“Unfortunately, Marco is still not a problem for Saturday,” BVB licensing players department head Sebastian Kehl told the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung” (WAZ) on Monday. “Otherwise, we have some battered players, but we will have to wait the next few days.” The wobble candidates include Witsel and Can, who formed the axis of the midfield at BVB before Corona’s break, but are now struggling with muscle problems.

BVB in hotel in quarantine

Borussia has been in the week-long quarantine training camp required by the German Football League since Saturday night. The team lives at the four-star Hotel l’Arriveè in Dortmund and travels from there to training sessions at the training ground in the Brackel district. “Everyone has breakfast at the hotel, then they go to Brackel to train and then they come back.” The hotel is available exclusively to the Bundesliga’s second division, “and of course we strictly follow the rules,” Kehl said.

Since last Wednesday, Lucien Favre’s team has been able to retrain the entire contact team. However, the preparation time until the season continues is quite short, Kehl said. That was not “optimal from a football point of view, but now all teams will have to fight with these framework conditions.”
