After the summer weekend, it will be much easier for many to stay home next week: the cold air in eastern Greenland brings us a temperature drop of around ten degrees, which is sometimes accompanied by strong storms.

Cold weather and farmer rules are known to be on the brink in times of climate change. Because when it’s hotter, colder air masses generally have a harder time reaching our latitudes. However, the cold traveler of the meteorological kitchen has no chance. This is demonstrated by the Eisheiligen 2020. It is quite accurate and just as impressive.

Because while Mother’s Day still the hot, humid, summery air, especially in the southern half of the country, caused a rather temperamental end to the week, climate change is forming over the North Atlantic. The cold air of eastern Greenland rushes between the high “Quirinius” of central Iceland and the low “Britta” Scandinavian directly to Central Europe.

This late winter greeting brings snow in the highlands above about 500 meters. In some places, even snow and broken snow cannot be ruled out, especially in the Black Forest and Ore Mountains area. But also for all hobby gardeners they must be careful: sensitive plants should be covered or brought with a night cleaning. Nights through Friday inclusive include repeated frost or frost. On the floor, it can occasionally cool below minus 5 degrees.

Before the frost, however, the change in weather continues to cause severe thunderstorms. Here are the details.

Monday night

Across the country, severe thunderstorms with a local thunderstorm threat threaten from North Rhine-Westphalia to Brandenburg. Otherwise, it stays calmer and more often dry at low temperatures between 15 and 4 degrees.

Monday

A day of generally intense weather that has a lot to offer: from Colonia Bay to the North Sea, the sun shines and stays dry. Otherwise it is gray and wet. Continuous heavy rains fall in a strip from the Black Forest to Brandenburg. Cold air slowly prevails and thus the snow line falls 500 meters in the lower mountain ranges of the Harz, Thuringian Forest, Rhön, Sauerland and Eifel Ore Mountains, and up to 800 meters in the Black Forest. There is a risk of snow breakage due to leafy trees.

In Bavaria, on the other hand, it remains stormy and warm at 14-20 degrees for a long time. During the rest of the day, it cools down during the day and therefore we only reach between five and twelve degrees in the afternoon. Therefore, there is a general drop in temperature of 15 to 20 degrees from Sunday to Monday. No wonder: the wind comes directly from the north and refreshes part of it.

Tuesday

On Tuesday night, the cold air also reaches the edge of the Alps. There also with snowfalls of about 500 meters upwards. On the other hand, the ghost ends fairly quickly during the day and is becoming friendlier. Temperatures are more than moderate to a maximum of 7 to 15 degrees. Tuesday is the coldest day of the weather week.

Wednesday to Friday

We stay in a cold northern current and temperatures are too cold for mid-May. At night, frost or frost awaits us in areas and during the day we can barely reach the 20 degree mark: Wednesday 8 to 16, Thursday 10 to 18 and Friday 12 to almost 20 degrees.

Saturday and Sunday

It remains with a mixture of sun and clouds, which is only occasionally accompanied by rain. It is more likely to get a bit wetter in the south. In the rest of the republic, however, it remains dry. Temperatures maintain their smooth upward trend and reach 13-21 degrees on Saturday and 14-22 degrees on Sunday.
