The league is considering whether to follow FIFA’s recommendation and allow five substitutions per game instead of three. This should help teams in difficult times to distribute the stress of the tight schedule well among players, even with a smaller team. Also, there may be unusually high temperatures in the June games, which could put additional pressure on professionals.

A calculation now shows that the rule change could be particularly advantageous for teams that are already strong. The so-called “Target Impact” can be used to show how strong a team is and how dangerous it is. Numerous statistics from previous games are included.

Based on this figure, teams with a strong substitute bank would benefit from an expansion of exchange capabilities, notably FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and Gladbach. The expansion would be fatal for Schalke: the club already occupies the last place in the list with a total of four possible substitutions.

So what sounds good at first might be an obvious disadvantage.
