The number of new corona infections has reached a new all-time high: The Robert Koch Institute reported 6,638 cases, more than ever since the outbreak of the pandemic. So far, the highest value was registered at the end of March with 6294 cases.

The number of people newly infected with the coronavirus in Germany in one day has again increased by leaps and bounds and thus has reached a record high. According to the Robert Koch Institute, health authorities reported 6,638 new infections in the morning, about 1,500 more than on Wednesday. So far, at the end of March, with almost 6,300 new infections, the majority had been registered.

However, the current values cannot be compared with those of the spring, because now many more tests are being carried out and therefore more infections are being discovered. Last Wednesday, the health authorities informed the RKI of 4,059 new infections. This was the first time since April that the 4000 mark was exceeded.

The rate of positive tests increases significantly

The number of corona tests has fluctuated between around 1.1 million and 1.2 million per week since mid-August. According to the RKI, the positive test rate increased significantly on Wednesday night: from 0.74 percent in late August to 2.48 percent in the week of October 5-11. In several labs there is a delay, according to the RKI, some reported reagent delivery problems.

“In recent weeks, the RKI has been receiving more and more reports from laboratories that are at the limit of their capacity to use,” the institute wrote in its management report on Wednesday. The additional need for tourists to test after the introduction of the accommodation ban with the “free tests” option has exacerbated the situation.

According to the RKI, at least 341,223 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis. Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9,710. That was 33 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 284,600 have been recovered.
