51 percent success: no one can say Trump failed

After four years in office, the president of the United States, Trump, is highly controversial. The evaluation depends on the perspective. Trump was definitely successful in terms of his party.

When the United States Senate rejected with a Republican majority earlier this year the initiation of an impeachment process against the President of the United States, Donald Trump, over the Ukraine issue, even the Republican senators could not deny that there were good reasons for it. “The fact that an act is worthy of impeachment does not mean that it is in the best interest of the country,” the influential senator Marco Rubio justified his vote at the time. He was not the only republican who justified himself with such constructions.

With Trump it is even more important than before what takes precedence for voters and therefore also for politics. Rather than the controversy Trump has created with his style in his four years, these are particular results. How much money do I have at the end of the month? Do I feel safe where I live? Can I pay for my health care costs? Especially the people who voted for him in 2016 are likely to seek answers to such questions when thinking about their voting decision.

Some were already repulsed by Trump’s behavior in 2016, while others seemed interested or hopeful about his promises: He wanted to replace the health insurance system also known as Obamacare, build a wall against Mexico, limit immigration, lower taxes. for companies and employees, practically all new international cooperation negotiate and above all: recover industrial employment. At the Republican nominating convention a few weeks ago, Trump said, “I have kept each and every promise.” Is that correct?

Pretty sure

The boom started with President Barack Obama and continued with Trump.

One hundred of his promises have been verified by US independent “Politifact” fact-checkers. Their result: 49 percent failed to retain Trump, but did unconditionally comply with a quarter. Something has happened in at least a fifth and the rest could still move. You could also say: You were 51 percent successful. In general, it’s a bit like economic growth and the job market situation; In parts, under Trump the trends that existed before continued. Then came the pandemic.

Trump has undoubtedly implemented his announcement to aggressively fight the so-called Islamic State (IS), move the Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, and withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and the TPP Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement. He replaced the North American trade agreement, NAFTA, with a new one and, as he announced, has messed with China.

At the national level, it lowered environmental protection regulations and other obstacles, for example for the oil and coal industry, and lowered taxes for companies. He has installed a host of conservative justices – after Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, it could soon be three of nine seats on the Supreme Court alone. From the point of view of conservatives in America, this is a long lasting success. In addition, Trump has also left certain social security systems intact, as promised.

Something moved

Even if this is sometimes not so clear because of the two-party system: also in the United States, politics does not just result in success or failure. Trump has achieved partial results that voters might like. Trump wanted, for example, to tax the upper class (including himself) more and relieve the middle class. During the great reform, however, he cut taxes much more drastically for the rich, pushing the national debt to new record levels. Trump has only partially achieved the supposed energy independence of the US, as long as the criterion is the difference between the energy produced and consumed in the country.

The tone is harsh in America when it comes to immigration.

Rules for immigrants without a residence permit have been tightened in some cases, immigration has been reduced, and visa access has become more difficult for citizens of some states. In mid-September, a court also confirmed the decision not to extend the residence permit to a total of 400,000 people and, if necessary, to deport them to their countries of origin. They had been admitted for humanitarian reasons due to natural disasters.

Just broken

Keeping half of the campaign promises, at least partially, is not a bad rate. But the voters are not a homogeneous mass that decides according to percentages, but according to their respective interests. Lower income groups have reason to be disappointed with Trump: He had promised to raise the minimum wage. But it remains unchanged at $ 7.25 an hour.

Likewise, the new health insurance should “take care of everyone” and “make the government pay for it.” But after a failed attempt to replace Obamacare, Republicans abandoned it to dismantle the existing system. Medicines haven’t gotten cheaper either as promised. 30 million Americans still don’t have health insurance. Half say they can’t afford it. It’s one of the biggest campaign issues Democrats can score with.

Trump’s much-heralded infrastructure program and the resulting jobs are also not in the offing. The state also does not help women who are not granted six-week paid maternity leave by their employers; Trump’s daughter and adviser Ivanka in particular campaigned for this. There is nothing to suggest that you will implement them in any of these topics.

Ruined success

Trump offers several arguments as to why he deserved reelection, but the most important one was always: Only I can get America out of the crisis. One of which he is supportive, because the coronavirus has shaken the economic data. In battling the pandemic, Trump was quite a fan, especially in the first few weeks, and therefore was not in the interest of the general public.

Its constituency, who live mainly outside the big cities, are less affected by the virus. But the worst effects on the lower income brackets are yet to come. At some point there will be no state financial aid for the people. Forced evictions for rent arrears are on hold until the end of the year, but the debt is growing. The big question is how people deal with their fears and how does this affect their voting decision.

So did Trump keep all of his promises? No. Did you break them all? None. Trump has represented for the most part Republican positions, prioritizing the economy and business, from the perspective of Republicans and conservatives, these are points that speak for him. Other things were secondary; about Trump’s behavior, his lies and contradictions. Was Trump’s four years “in the best interest of the country”? It is a matter of perspective.
