The number of new corona infections in Germany remains at a high level. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Saturday morning, citing information from the health authorities, 31,300 new cases of infection were registered in one day.

The number of new infections recently exceeded 30,000

On Friday morning, the RKI reported more than 33,000 new infections with the coronavirus; However, this number included around 3,500 cases that had not yet been included in Thursday’s statistics due to a data breach. These are cases from Baden-Württemberg that were not submitted on time. With these approximately 3,500 cases, several new infections above the 30,000 threshold would have been announced for the first time on Thursday morning.

As of Saturday of last week, the number of new infections was 28,438.

702 more deaths reported

Health authorities also reported 702 new deaths in one day. The previous high of 952 deaths was reached on Wednesday. The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently increased, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 25,640.

7-day incidence at highest level since pandemic onset

In total, the Robert Koch Institute has counted 1,471,238 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 19, 00:00). Around 1,085,500 people are estimated to have recovered.

The RKI gave the seven-day incidence on Saturday at 189.6. This is the highest level since the pandemic began. According to RKI’s management report on Friday, the national seven-day R-value was 1.05 (previous day: 0.97). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 105 more people.

Austria and Italy are also locked up again

In view of the high number of infections, Italy and Austria have now tightened their crown measures. In Italy there is a lockdown between Christmas Eve and January 6, which is only partially lifted in four days.

Austria will enter a strict lockdown on December 26; it is already the third in the country. There should be a relaxation for citizens participating in the mass corona tests scheduled for mid-January.
