In one day, German health authorities sent 22,771 new infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). That comes from the RKI information on Sunday morning. The highest value with 33,777 infections reported came on Friday, but included about 3,500 cases reported the day before. Last Sunday, the figure was 20,200. Health authorities also reported 409 new deaths in one day.

The previous high of 952 deaths was reached on Wednesday. The number of daily deaths has tended to rise recently, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 26,049.

More than a million people are considered recovered

In total, the Robert Koch Institute has counted 1,494,009 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until December 20). Around 1,097,400 people are estimated to have recovered. The number of new infections reported to health authorities in seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence of 7 days) was calculated by the RKI on Sunday as 192.2. This is the highest level since the pandemic began.

According to RKI’s situation report on Saturday night, the national seven-day R-value was 1.06 (previous day: 1.05). This means that in theory, 100 infected people infect 106 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
