The number of new infections remains high: SPD health expert Lauterbach now believes that a new blockage is likely. The RKI reported 11,176 new infections: 10 infected people infect an average of 14 other people.

In view of the persistently high number of new infections, SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach believes that a new blockage is likely to occur in a few weeks. “If we fail to restrict personal contacts in the next two or three weeks, the numbers will have increased so much in a few weeks that we will just have another lockdown,” Lauterbach told “Bild am Sonntag.” Any contact, no matter where, could be contaminated. “It is no longer enough to be careful and comply with the AHA + L rules.”

He criticized the measures taken by the federal and state governments to contain the corona pandemic as inadequate. “Unfortunately, the restrictions that have now been decided are not enough to avoid the overcrowding of intensive care units and a significant increase in the death rate in December. We have to readjust that.”

The SPD politician called for the possibility of working from home to be expanded. He also suggested divided classes in schools. “If we don’t want schools with regular dropouts to become hotspots, school classes should now be divided into morning and afternoon classes.”

11,176 new cases

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Sunday morning, citing information from health authorities, that 11,176 new cases of infection had been registered in 24 hours. The number of registered cases is usually lower on Sundays than during the week because fewer tests are carried out on weekends and health authorities do not usually provide all the data.

The total number of cases of infection registered in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic amounted to 429,181. The day before, the RKI announced the highest number of new infections in Germany since the start of the pandemic, with 14,714 cases. However, it also included cases that had already been registered on Thursday but were only reported to the RKI on Friday due to technical problems.

The number of new infections in Germany has been well above previous spring highs for days. However, the numbers are difficult to compare, as far more tests for the virus are now being analyzed than back then. The number of deaths in Germany related to the new coronavirus has now risen to 10,032, as the RKI also announced. There are 29 more deaths than the day before. According to the institute, the number of people recovered is around 317,100.

National incidence in 74.9

According to the RKI, the incidence nationwide rose to 74.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in one week. On Saturday the value was still 68.4.

The highest values among the federal states were on Sunday Berlin (119.6), Bremen (114.9), Hesse (104.1), North Rhine-Westphalia (96.0), Bavaria (79.6) and Saarland (90, 7) – Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had the lowest with 26.8 and Saxony-Anhalt with 28.4.

Ten infected people infected 14 other people

According to RKI’s management report on Saturday, the number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.36 (previous day: 1.23). This means that 10 infected people infect almost 14 other people. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

In addition, the RKI gives the so-called seven-day R in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.38 on Saturday (previous day: 1.30). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
