A 500 kg bomb from World War II was found this afternoon while working in a construction shaft in the Gallus district of Frankfurt. After further examination of the failure by the Hessian State Munitions Disposal Service (RP Darmstadt), it is likely that the bomb will be defused on Sunday, December 6, 2020.
Due to the amount of explosives and the design of the British-type bomb, a large evacuation radius is required, as considerable damage to buildings and acute danger to life and limbs can be expected in the event of a detonation.
According to the statistics of the population registry, around 12,300 inhabitants would be affected. There are also nursing homes, some other special objects like district heating lines and substations, as well as Deutsche Bahn central facilities in the area. The pandemic situation presents an additional difficulty.
All the corresponding measures that will be necessary if the scheduled time for mitigation is maintained, are being agreed and announced tomorrow. An accurate and interactive map of the evacuation zone will also be activated tomorrow.
This is a joint press release from the public order office, the Frankfurt am Main fire department, the health department and the Frankfurt police.
