Garmin physical activity tracking service stops working and frustrates users

GPS device maker Garmin’s online fitness tracking service has dropped, frustrating runners and cyclists who rely on the service to upload data from their latest workouts. Garmin Connect was out of service on Friday.

Garmin Connect, an app and website that works with the company’s popular line of sports watches, stopped working on Thursday. The company at that time apologized for the interruption, when it indicated that the problem was more widespread and also affected its communications systems.

“We are currently experiencing a disruption affecting Garmin.com and Garmin Connect,” the company said on its Twitter and website accounts. “This outage also affects our call centers, and we are currently unable to receive any calls, emails, or online chat. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and apologize for this inconvenience.”

Fitness enthusiasts turned to social media to express their frustrations, with some saying they couldn’t connect since Thursday. Garmin Connect allows users to track training data and share their running and cycling routes. The outage may also be affecting pilots, and the ZDNet tech site reports that pilots have been unable to download updates from the Garmin aviation database on their Garmin aircraft navigation systems.

Several Garmin employees have reported that the problem appears to be a ransomware attack, ZDNet reported. He added that Garmin declined to confirm that the disruption is related to the attack.
