Ferrari power unit ‘not great’ – Steiner

Haas Formula 1 team principal Guenther Steiner has said he will need to sit down with the power unit supplier Ferrari to find out why the 2020 unit is not up to scratch.

For the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix, only one of the six Ferrari-powered cars was ranked in the top ten. In 2019, five cars in the top ten were powered by Scuderia.

“You can see a little line through all the Ferrari-powered cars,” Steiner said.

“We haven’t done any major analysis, and we haven’t talked to them about it, so I think with that question, you’re talking to the Ferrari guys. Maybe they know more about it than I do!

“It is obvious that I cannot say that everything is fantastic because look where Ferrari is, look where Alfa [Romeo] is, and look where we are. We have to sit down and see what the cause is. ”

Both Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, who will start 15th and 16th at the Red Bull Ring, were optimistic that the problems may be circuit-specific problems.

However, a year ago, Magnussen was ranked fifth on a track that is the shortest on the calendar in terms of lap time.

“It looks like we’re going to be having a tough season here,” said Steiner.

“In some places, you can improve a little, but in general, what you see here and what you saw in Barcelona [in pre-season testing], maybe some races are a little better, but to qualify as where we were last year, I don’t think that will happen to us [this year] Unfortunately.”
