The disturbing symptom of COVID-19 that can last 150 days

Contracting coronavirus is bad enough, but having long-term symptoms that can last up to six months is really the icing on the cake. And a new study listed in the International COVID-19 Dermatology Registry found that the COVID symptom on the toes can last up to six months.

COVID toes have been defined as red, sore and itchy irritations on the fingers. They lead to discoloration of the skin and can be quite painful.

“When we start to look at the duration of symptoms, some of these patients have really incredibly long-lasting symptoms,” said Dr. Esther Freeman, the registry’s principal investigator and director of Global Health Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “In particular, we saw it with chilblains, also known as Covid toes, where they have had skin symptoms for more than 60 days.”

In the report, covered by TODAY.com, one patient reported “COVID toes” for more than 130 days and another reported it for more than 150 days.

Dermatological conditions including long-lasting hives, scaly papules, and plaques have also been observed in patients with COVID-19.

Fever, tiredness, and a dry cough are the most common symptoms of COVID-19, but skin problems are also common. In the International League of Dermatological Societies and American Academy of Dermatology study, “dermatological manifestations” were observed in the group of 1000 cases from 39 countries.

Dr. Julia S. Lehman, an associate professor in the Division of Dermatopathology and Cutaneous Immunopathology at the Mayo Clinic, told Yahoo Life that COVID toes are a bit puzzling to the medical community. “The COVID toe phenomenon appears to closely resemble the changes that can be seen in perniosis, a condition known to cause a purplish to blue discoloration of the toes, fingers, or tips of the fingers. ears. In perniosis, it is usually exposure to cold, damp conditions that causes inflammation in the surrounding blood vessels. With perniosis, it is believed that the ears, toes and fingers seem to be the most affected, because they are colder and, being peripheral, they have some of the smallest blood vessels in the body ”.

With the prolonged skin symptoms of COVID-19, it should be noted that its constant appearance does not indicate that the body is still infected. It means that the body’s immune system is recovering from the infection.
