Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta urged the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) to develop harmonized COVID-19 protocols ahead of the African Union Summit scheduled for February 2021.
Kenyatta said protocols aimed at ensuring the safety of the health of participants would determine whether the meetings are held virtually or physically.
“The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should provide protocols that they believe will ensure that participants are safe and will determine whether we will have virtual or physical meetings,” he said.
Kenyatta made the remarks Thursday night during a virtual meeting of the Bureau of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU and the presidents of the Regional Economic Communities (REC).
The meeting was convened by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who is also the President of the AU, to discuss the modalities of holding the 34th regular session of the AU Assembly, the 38th regular session of the Council Executive and the 41st regular period of sessions of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the AU.
Other leaders who attended the meeting were Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, the President of Mozambique, Felipe Nyusi, the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and the President of Ghana. , Nana Akufo-Addo.
