The Ethiopian Media Council called on media companies to transcend their editorial differences in the fight against the global coronavirus pandemic. In a statement the Council sent to The reporter, asked the media and journalists to provide verified, fast and reliable information to their audiences.

Recognizing the government’s efforts to curb the global pandemic, the council ordered the media to work to raise awareness in society.

“We must take the virus as a threat to humanity and confront it together,” the statement said.

Corroborating the fact that the coronavirus pandemic is spreading at an alarming rate, with the help of data from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and the Institute of Public Health, the Council recalled that there have been more than 206,000 verified infections in the country.

“This means that the spread of the virus is gaining ground and the reluctance of society to observe security measures would eventually result in devastation,” he said.

In order for the media to achieve this goal, the Council gave four recommendations that they should follow. Television stations are encouraged to place a logo on news broadcasts, advertisements and programs so that the public will pay attention to the spread of the virus. Radio and television stations are encouraged to broadcast separate “COVID-19 news” segments in addition to broadcasting COVID-related messages. For magazines and newspapers, he recommended printing COVID-related logos or messages on their covers.

In addition, the council called on the government to improve the speed at which it provides COVID-related information to the media and to ensure that media companies do not face challenges in accessing information in case the spread leads to blackouts. as seen in other countries.
