We will get to test Black Ops Cold War’s Fireteam mode this weekend.
One of the most interesting novelties of this year’s Call of Duty, Black Ops Cold War, is the Fireteam mode for 40 players. It offers a unique experience, with a mix of objective play and action that is not seen anywhere else in Call of Duty.
It looks like Fireteam will launch with several different settings or sub-modes, kind of like the limited-time modes in Warzone. The Fireteam variant that we will have access to in the beta, and the only one confirmed so far, is Dirty Bomb. Treyarch first showed it off in this short trailer, which you can watch below.

In Dirty Bomb, 10 squads of four fall onto a large map to collect uranium and deposit it in Dirty Bombs scattered across the map. When this happens, the bombs detonate and fill the surrounding area with radiation hazards. There’s a big focus on vehicles here, including seemingly attack helicopters that players will be able to pilot Battlefield-style.
It’s not exactly clear what players must do to win, but Treyarch notes that each successful detonation will credit points to the responsible team. There is also another twist that is not entirely clear in Treyarch’s notes. The developer says that the longer a player holds onto uranium, the more radiation it affects. Things like movement speed, health regeneration, and even perks could be negatively affected.
This is not a one-life mode, as dead players will be able to respawn in their teammates. Fireteam: Dirty Bomb is the highlight of this week’s Black Ops Cold War second beta, though it’s unclear if the new mode will be available immediately or later this weekend.
And don’t forget to check out our Black Ops Cold War beta tips if you plan to participate. The beta version will be released later today for reserve players on PC and Xbox One, and for everyone on PS4.
