Dublin, September 17 (IANS): The Irish capital of Dublin has imposed a series of new restrictive measures aimed at curbing the spread of the new coronavirus.

The new measures, which were announced by the Irish government on Tuesday and went into effect on Wednesday, are mainly focused on limiting the number of people gathering indoors and outdoors and restricting their movement, the Xinhua news agency reports.

Under the new measures, no more than two households in Dublin are required to meet at any one time, either indoors or outdoors, and the maximum number of people allowed for such meetings is six.

The number of people who can attend sports games and events in the city has been limited to 100, regardless of the size of the venue.

Pubs and bars that do not serve food must be closed after 21 September.

The new measures also advise higher education institutions to consider improved protection measures and encourage local residents not to travel outside of Dublin.

On Tuesday, the Irish government also unveiled a new medium-term plan to deal with the pandemic in the country over the next six to nine months.

According to the plan, the risk of the pandemic in the country will be classified into five levels, with Level 1 being the lowest and with the least amount of restrictive measures, and Level 5 the highest and with the most restrictions.

Currently, both Dublin and the rest of Ireland are classified by the government at Level 2.

Restrictive measures for Level 2 include limiting the number of people attending a wedding or funeral to 50 people.

Dublin has seen a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

Of the 2,133 confirmed cases reported in Ireland in the past 10 days, 1,210 cases, or nearly 57 percent, came from Dublin, according to data from the Irish Department of Health.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Ireland stood at 31,799 with 1,788 deaths.
