PARIS

Saturday brought grim news for France, as cases of the new coronavirus infection took a big leap.

According to the French Ministry of Health, 26,896 infections were recorded across the country on Saturday. This replaces the 20,339 cases recorded on Friday, which had been the biggest jump in a day since the end of the shutdown in May.

Since the beginning of the record keeping of the disease, a total of 718,873 cases of infection have been registered in France.

There were 54 additional deaths, compared with 62 on Friday, with the death toll currently at 32,684.

Hospitalizations are recorded at 4,999 with 928 patients in intensive care.

Government and health officials in France have done everything possible to remedy a situation that appears to be out of control.

To stop the spread of the virus at social gatherings, Ile-de-France officials last week announced the closure of cafes and bars for two weeks, as well as that all restaurants will close at 10 pm (0800GMT). The virus has spread in the region, along with Aix-Marseille and the overseas territory of Guadeloupe, which had seen the same restrictions implemented the week before.

Some 70 departments in France remain in a vulnerable situation, while 1,446 active groups of infection have been identified throughout the country.

Worldwide, cases of infections are reported in just over 37 million and deaths about 1.07 million in 188 countries, according to the latest figures from the United States-based Johns Hopkins University. Some 25.71 million have recovered from the disease.
