According to the latest COVID-19 study, transmission of the infection within homes is high and occurs rapidly, and can arise from both children and adults. The researchers evaluated 101 homes in the US for their new study. Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation showed that 51 percent of the other members living with a person who was COVID-19 positive also became infected.

Carlos G. Grijalva, co-author of the study and associate professor of Health Policy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the US, said they observed that after a first member of the household contracted the virus, several infections in the home. The infections occurred quickly, whether the first sick member of the household was a child or an adult, Grijalva said.

Secondary household infections occurred in five days.

The study, published in the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, said that at least 75 percent of secondary household infections occurred within five days of the first person in the household who experienced symptoms. The research further revealed that fewer than half of the household members felt symptoms when they first tested positive, and many reported no symptoms during the seven-day daily follow-up period.

“In the absence of an efficient approach to identifying infections without regard for symptoms, these findings suggest that early isolation measures as soon as a person feels ill could reduce the likelihood of domestic transmission,” the scientists wrote. in the study.

The researchers further said that the initial member of the household who experienced symptoms was considered the ‘index patient’ in the study, while other members of the household may have been infected at the same time but developed symptoms at different times or remained asymptomatic. The researchers, however, believe that the findings still underscore the potential for transmission by symptomatic or asymptomatic contact with household members and the importance of quarantine.

Immediately isolating people with COVID-19 can reduce domestic transmission, the scientists said, adding that people who suspect they might have COVID-19 should isolate themselves, stay home and use a separate bedroom and bathroom if possible.
