An undisclosed child in a hospital in Ireland is currently fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus, it has been confirmed.
According to the latest report of the Health Protection Surveillance center, a young man was admitted to an Intensive Care Unit at a hospital somewhere in the Republic earlier this week.
The boy, who is between five and 14 years old, was admitted to the health center ICU 24 hours before midnight on Tuesday May 5.
It is the second time that a child in this age group has been treated in a critical care unit in Ireland since the pandemic began.
The report does not specify whether the child already has another underlying condition.
120 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in children under the age of four living in Ireland, while more than 200 children under the age of ten have contracted the virus.
However, so far no patient in this age profile has died from the virus in Ireland.
The youngest victims of COVID-19 in Ireland so far, according to official records, included a 17-year-old and a 23-year-old.
Most of the deaths recorded as a result of COVID-19 have involved people 80 years of age or older.
The death toll from the virus in Ireland is 1,429.
Of that number, 956 occurred in the category of over 80 years.
