A person living in Sörmland has been tested and found to carry the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Tracing of the infection was started immediately and the risk of spreading the infection due to the case is considered very low.

Infection control Sörmland has contacted the person in question. The person in question has acted completely in accordance with the recommendations even before the symptoms. The person in question does not need hospital care and follows instructions not to transmit the infection further, says Signar Mäkitalo, an infection control doctor in Sörmland.

The person who tested positive for the virus traveled to Sörmland from the UK for a visit over Christmas.

The UK recently reported that a new variant of the covid-19 virus, called VOC202012 / 01, has been spreading in the country since September. The variant is believed to have a higher dispersibility compared to other variants, but analyzes of its properties are still ongoing.

It was not unexpected. We know this variant has been around in the UK since September and has also been reported from other European countries in the form of isolated cases, says Karin Tegmark Wisell, department head at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

It is too early to draw any conclusions about the significance of the find for Sweden.

This is the first unique case, it says nothing in this situation if the variant had been extended. We continue with the expanded analyzes to see if we can find more cases. But I want to emphasize that it is important for everyone to follow the advice and recommendations that we have to reduce the spread of covid-19 in society, says Karin Tegmark Wisell.

On December 21, the government decided to ban entry from the UK due to the spread of the infection and new variants of the coronavirus that have been reported from there.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has decided to urge visitors to stay home for at least seven days after arriving in Sweden and to avoid contact with other people as much as possible. The invitation applies to all participants who have stayed in the UK since 12 December.
