The European Union and the African Union sign a partnership to expand preparedness for health emergencies

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) launched a new partnership initiative to strengthen Africa’s capacity Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prepare for and respond to threats to public health in Africa. The four-year project, ‘EU for Health Security in Africa: European Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention‘, funded by the EU, will also facilitate harmonized surveillance and disease reporting, and support the implementation of the Africa Public Health Workforce Strategy Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new partnership between the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it is a crucial step in achieving this common goal. We are acting now, together, to end this crisis and prepare for future outbreaks. Our AU-EU Commission-to-Commission meeting in February was instrumental in strengthening the prospects for our cooperation, which is now bearing fruit ”.

The EU supports the continental leadership and coordination of the African Union to respond to the ongoing pandemic, and together we are helping partner countries to strengthen their capacities to prevent, detect and respond to health threats ”.

We know what to fight COVID-19-19 in Africa is not only about saving lives today, but about the future of the continent, it is about strengthening our health systems to better support preparedness and response to health emergencies in the future. About supporting health security in Africa

This project illustrates the commitment of the European Union to help increase preparedness for global health emergencies and strengthen support for health systems in Africa. Through this partnership, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and ECDC will be able to exchange experiences and lessons learned from working with African and European Member States in harmonized continental surveillance of infectious diseases, data exchange and early threat detection, as well as in preparedness, risk assessment, rapid response and operations of emergency and how to adapt them to your needs. Capacity building components in these work areas will be integrated into existing Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initiatives and strategies to support the African health security framework.

Funded by the European Development Fund, the project includes a contribution agreement with ECDC of 9 million euros and a complementary grant to Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of 1 million euros to cover personnel costs.

This agreement will enter into force on January 1, 2021.
