IOS 14.3 released for public beta testers

If you’ve been wondering what Apple was going to get out of another week of public beta testing for iOS 14.3, wonder no more. The final version to be released to the public next week is now available for download ahead of general release.

Fitness + and AirPods Pro Max

As previously speculated, iOS 14.3’s gold master brings with it compatibility with Apple’s newly released AirPods Pro Max and new Fitness + on-demand workout subscription. The former will begin to hit the doors next Tuesday and the latter will launch next Monday. Based on that time, you would expect iOS 14.3 to be released to the public tomorrow or Friday.

What’s new?

In addition to Apple’s two new products, there are actually quite a few updates coming with iOS 14.3, including support for Apple ProRAW (which allows you to manipulate all components of an image after it has been taken) and a new shortcut app. Behavior that allows you to create a custom icon for an application without having to open the Shortcuts application.

Other trivia (drawn from the initial beta version) include:

  • The Home app now allows you to update your HomeKit-enabled hardware without having to open the third-party app.
  • Ecosia, the eco-friendly search engine, is now an option in Safari
  • If you are also testing the beta version of watchOS 7.2, you will now see notifications from Cardio Fitness warning you when your cardiovascular condition drops low enough to negatively affect your VO2 max.
  • App clips can now be launched by scanning a QR code with the camera.
  • Air quality health recommendations are now offered for some regions, including the US, UK, Germany, India, and Mexico.
  • Third-party apps are now offered during setup in certain countries to comply with antitrust laws.

What is fixed?

Honestly, there were not many bugs in this version. At least there weren’t many in the official release notes. The thing to keep in mind is that there will be a separate set of release notes for the public release once it’s widely available.

Whats Next?

As I said above, iOS 14.3 will be available to the general public in the next four days. Fitness + is part of the Health app, and while it is not currently visible, you will need to have an updated operating system in order to access the workouts you paid for (if you have a top-tier Apple One plan).

If you’re expecting AirPods Pro Max delivery next week, you’ll need to update your iOS device in order to pair the new over-ear headphones (more on those in the coming weeks).

With iOS 14.3 available, we will likely see the iOS 14.4 public beta begin next week or the following week. With Christmas and New Years just around the corner, this next beta cycle is likely to be a light one, possibly focused on bringing out Apple’s often rumored but never materialized AirTag search devices.

Whatever happens, I’ll be back next week!
