Fitbit began rolling out Google Assistant on Versa 3 and Sense yesterday. As part of that, users can now link their Fitbit accounts to the Google Assistant for basic sleep and wellness data.
In the Google Assistant settings list, scroll down to the new “Wellness” menu, where you can “manage your sleep, exercise and nutrition data.” At the moment, only “Sleep” appears and Fitbit is supported. By tapping “Connect” on the next page, you are prompted to agree to the terms. You will then be directed to the Fitbit mobile app or website to approve Google access.
Once completed, you can make two identical queries to the Wizard:
- How did I sleep last night?
- Show my dream summary.
Google will respond in a format of “Since yesterday, you slept a total of x hr and xx min” which can represent naps. It’s the same answer on phones, Assistant smart displays, and speakers. There are no accompanying images or graphics, while you cannot ask about other days / periods. When you inquire, the Assistant suggests “use an application on your watch or mobile device.”
At launch, this feature set is very basic and will likely be prompted for on Fitbit smartwatches. However, given the nature of the Wizard, the commands work everywhere.
On the privacy front, Google says that “Fitbit sleep data is temporarily stored and used to give you information about your sleep, health and fitness. Fitbit sleep data is not used for Google ads. “
Given the description found on the Wizard’s Wellness settings page, more features are coming. Commands that allow you to retrieve more data about recent activity would be helpful. For example, getting metrics about your last run would be a useful alternative to the app.
