Earlier this year, COVID-19 was considered just a respiratory illness. As time passed and more research was done, we realized that it can also cause damage to many other vital organs in the body. It has also been observed that the new coronavirus can cause respiratory problems and long-term fatigue.

Now, a recent study presented at the 29th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, which took place online from October 29 to 31, 2020, has found that long-haul carriers with COVID-19 can present persistent skin-related problems long after your infection. has cleared.

Long-haul carriers of COVID-19

Many recovered COVID-19 patients complained of persistent symptoms of the disease even after testing negative for the virus in their body. While some people may face symptoms similar to what they would have been facing during the period of illness, others may present different symptoms after the negative test. These patients are known as COVID long-distance carriers.

Skin-Related COVID-19 Symptoms in Long Haul Carriers

In this study, scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, in conjunction with the International League of Dermatological Societies and the American Academy of Dermatology, established an international registry in April 2020 to record COVID-19 skin symptoms.

In this registry, scientists documented around 1,000 cases of patients exhibiting COVID-19 skin symptoms.

Of all patients, the median duration of symptoms on COVID-19 long-haul carriers was 12 days. The duration of the different skin symptoms for patients with laboratory confirmed and suspected COVID-19 infection was:

1. Rash-like morbilliform lasted a median duration of seven days

2. Urticarial eruptions lasted a median of four days.

3. Papulosquamous eruptions lasted a median of 20 days for laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases. However, one of these patients showed the symptom for up to 70 days.

Four. The pernio (chilblains), also known as COVID toes, had an average duration of 10 days in laboratory-confirmed cases and 15 days in suspected cases. However, in some cases, COVID toes lasted 130 days after the infection was confirmed in the laboratory.

With this study, scientists confirmed that patients who survive coronavirus infection may have long-lasting skin symptoms, especially COVID toes. The scientists further stated that this study confirms that COVID-19 infection can affect different organs and systems of the body and the skin could be a way to assess residual inflammation after viral load is removed.
