The president’s medical team also said he had been prescribed dexamethasone. The drug is reserved for those with severe disease, because it has not been shown to benefit those with milder forms of the disease and may even be risky.
“Dexamethasone is the most puzzling of the medications we’re seeing being given to you right now,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, chief physician at Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider. The drug is not normally used unless the patient’s condition appears to be deteriorating, he added.
“Suddenly, the kitchen sink is being thrown at him,” Dr. McGinn said. “The question arises: Is he sicker than we hear, or are they being too aggressive because he’s the president, in a way that could be potentially harmful?
