In just the second week of pupils returning to school in Scotland, nearly 17,500 children were screened for the coronavirus.

Only 49 turned out to be positive.

Demand for tests for children ages two to 17 soared 300% in one week, but only two more had the virus than the previous week.

One theory is that the usual back-to-school colds and bugs have made a comeback after five months away from the classroom and from other children.

Clinical Director Jason Leitch is preparing to write to parents next week to reassure them and give them a simple guide on when a test is required and when it is not.

But when should you worry? When should you stop children from going to school and what role do schools play in demanding exams? We consulted the latest guidelines from the Scottish government.

My child has cold symptoms, do I send him to school or not?

This is all due to symptoms.

If your child has any of the coronavirus symptoms that indicate he needs a test, he and everyone else in the home, including siblings, should isolate themselves immediately.

You must book a test for the child with symptoms via www.nhsinform.scot or, if you cannot connect, by calling 0800 028 2816.

A runny nose, stuffy nose, or sore throat are currently not recognized symptoms that require testing.

Symptoms that trigger the need for a test are different from the usual cold symptoms.

When should I book a test?

Book a test if you or your child have:

  • a new, ongoing cough (coughing for more than an hour, or three or more coughing spells in 24 hours)
  • fever / high temperature (37.8 ° C or higher)
  • loss or change of sense of smell or taste

You should also book a test if Test and Protect has listed it as a contact for someone who has tested positive.

Can my child be sent home from school with a cold and ordered to have an exam before returning?

All schools are on the lookout for possible outbreaks.

Children will be sent home from school if they show symptoms of coronavirus.

This means that you must book a trial immediately. Your family must also follow self-isolation guidelines.

All schools have plans in place if there is an outbreak. In the event of an outbreak, Public Health Scotland will coordinate the activity with Test and Protect.

If your child feels unwell with different symptoms, you should treat them as you normally would.

Can a school insist that my child get tested for coronavirus?

Someone should get tested for coronavirus if they have symptoms or if a contact tracker has told them to. If someone develops symptoms while at school, they will be asked to go home and schedule a test.

If your child has a cold or other illness with different symptoms, these should be treated normally and seek medical help if necessary.

But a test should only be scheduled if one of the recognized symptoms of Covid-19 is present or a contact tracker asks for it.

A school cannot insist on seeing evidence of a negative test.

What do we do after a test? And if my child is asked to isolate himself, does the rest of the family have to?

All household members should continue to isolate themselves until the test results are obtained.

If your child’s test result is negative, and your child is not yet isolated as a “close contact” from a confirmed case, you can end the isolation and return to school when well enough and fever-free for 48 hours. .

The rest of your home can end up with insulation right away.

If the test is positive, the symptomatic child should be isolated for up to 10 days after symptoms start, or longer if they still have a fever.

The rest of the family must be isolated for 14 days after the person who tested positive showed symptoms, even if they themselves have no symptoms.

You will also be put in contact with your local contact tracing team so that other close contacts of your child can be identified. These close contacts will also be asked to self-isolate for 14 days.

The Proof and Protection process is confidential, and your close contacts will not be told that you were in contact with unless you give your permission.

Should the whole family be tested?

Only family members who have symptoms should be tested.

If you have no symptoms and you isolate yourself as a close contact of someone with coronavirus, other people in your household and extended home (if you have one) will not be asked to isolate together with you, unless have also done it. been in close contact with a person who is a confirmed case, in which case he will be informed by the NHS.
