Dollar Tree, Family Dollar reverse coronavirus mask policy

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores will “request” but will no longer require shoppers to wear masks when shopping as a precaution against coronavirus.

The websites of the two chains, which share common ownership, claim that employees and vendors still have to wear masks and that customers should, too.

Like many other large American retailers, including Walmart, Kohl’s, Kroger, and Winn-Dixie, stores have recently implemented mask requirements, highlighting the reversal.

On July 8, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree announced that masks would be needed for everyone inside, employees, vendors, and buyers, USA Today reported.

But an update to the rules released on July 16 altered the wording and omitted the requirement for buyers.

“In accordance with the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we are requiring all associates and suppliers to wear face coats when inside our stores,” says the store’s mask policy. “We also request that our clients wear facial coatings and require facial coatings when required to do so by state or local ordinance.”

CORONAVIRUS MASKS ARE REQUIRED INSIDE THESE STORES IN THE UNITED STATES

Stores will provide masks and gloves to all employees during their shifts, according to their respective websites, and companies say they support “all local and state ordinances that require associates and buyers to wear gloves and / or face covers while are in public. “

Stores have also added clear plastic screens at cash registers at all of their more than 15,000 locations in North America, according to the site.

In early May, a dispute over the wearing of masks at a Family Dollar store in Michigan left a security guard shot dead. Governor Gretchen Whitmer had issued a statewide mask order at the time.

Calvin “Duper” Munerlyn, the father of nine children, told a woman he needed a mask to enter the store on May 1, according to prosecutors.

Sharmel Teague, 45, allegedly started yelling at Munerlyn and spit in his face. He asked her to leave and told the cashier not to serve her.

Twenty minutes later, her son Ramonyea Bishop, 23, allegedly returned to the store with Teague’s husband, confronted Munerlyn, and shot him in the head.
