Daryl More said he resigned as general manager of the Rockets to spend more time with his family.
A week and a half later, the Moore 76ers were the new president.
How did Philadelphia lure him?
Mark Stein of The New York Times in his newsletter:
People inside the industry estimate that Morey earns more than 10 million a year. Specific figures were not released, but some insist the deal is at the forefront of a five-year, 60 60 million deal, when Phil Jackson was reportedly appointed team president by the Knicks.
That’s a big salary for a lead executive. Good for 76ers owner Josh Harris. There is no salary cap on front office fees.
Also good for Harris’s spending on strong choices. Moore proved himself to be an excellent general manager in Houston. If willing to pay too much, it seems wise to get someone who has already demonstrated the ability to do well.
Joel Embid and Ben Simmons are a tough fit. But Mori has the chops to build an auxiliary cast around them – or maybe eventually a trade. Or both! Moore is a wheeler dealer.
Philadelphia also spent a lot of money to get the Doc rivers. All of this suggests adherence to a plan on paying luxury tax next season.
After underwhelming last season, 76 people are paying to give themselves the best chance of success. But Harris will expect a high return on his big investments in the president, coach and possibly, roster.
