A Florida father is now fighting for his life after contracting his son’s coronavirus, who ignored his parents’ advice to stay home and reunite with his friends.
Plantation’s John Place has been admitted to the intensive care unit at Westside Regional Medical Center and was put on a ventilator for more than two weeks.
The 42-year-old man contracted the virus along with his entire family after his 21-year-old son went out with his friends and returned home with him, infecting his family.
However, it is his father who came out of this the worst. He has now been in the hospital for about three weeks.
Michelle Zymet, Place’s wife and the boy’s stepmother, said she begged her stepson to stay home and that if he went out he would not meet his friends and put on a mask.
She asked him to think about his father’s health, since Place is at high risk due to his weight and diabetes.
Zymet told 7 News Miami: “He always assured me, ‘Don’t worry, Mom. I’m doing everything right, relax, relax.'” You know what these kids are like, so I trusted him. ”
Despite his specific request not to, the unidentified stepson came out one June night and reunited with his friends, taking off his mask while eating and drinking.
A few days later, he developed the telltale cold symptoms and discovered that one of his friends at the meeting had tested positive for the virus.
At that stage, it was too late.
Zymet continued: “You let your guard down just once, it’s all you need.
“You come home and infect the whole house.”
The disease spread to the entire family, which is exactly what the Florida government is concerned about.
Authorities have feared that the increase in recent cases could be exacerbated by the youth gathering before infecting their older or vulnerable family members.
Zymet added: “Maybe they think, ‘None of us is sick. We are fine.’ They don’t understand that many of us are asymptomatic and positive carriers of the virus.”
She went on to say that younger people will not know [the true danger of the virus] until I get home. “
Florida has now passed the 300,000 confirmed case mark, and as of this writing, 4,676 had died in the state after testing positive.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay John’s medical bills.
