Armed with knives, knowledge of their prey and a great deal of cruelty, unknown people mutilate horses in French meadows, in acts that could be ritual.
The police are puzzled by the macabre attacks, which in most cases consist of amputating one of the animals’ ears – usually the right – which is reminiscent of the bullfighter’s trophy in the plaza.
Some thirty attacks have been reported across France, from the mountainous Jura region in the east to the Atlantic coast, many of them in recent months, the agriculture minister said on Friday. There was an attack in February, according to the news magazine Le Point. And the mystery grows with each attack.
“We do not exclude anything”Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie told France-Info radio on Friday before heading to an equestrian club in the central Saone-et-Loire region, where an attack had been recorded the day before.
“Ears are cut off, eyes are emptied, an animal bleeds …”he said when explaining the macabre fate suffered by one of the animals most loved by the French.
“All means have been put in place to put an end to this horror”the minister tweeted.
After the first sighting of the perpetrator of one of these acts, the Gendarmerie of Auxerre, Normandy, released a composite portrait based on the description made by a man who confronted two of them at his animal shelter in a village in the Bourgogne region -Franche-Comte.
Theories abound as to whether it is the morbid acts of an unknown cult, a lurid “challenge” spread by social media, or acts of copycat. The question is whether these barbaric acts, some of them performed with surgical precision, can be perpetrated without in-depth knowledge of equine anatomy or on a horse in a paddock that is supposed to run away.
