Working hours: Álvaro Uribe’s project advances, which reduces working hours in Colombia – Congress – Politics

In the midst of an acute controversy between businessmen and Congress, the Senate of the Republic approved in the second of four debates the bill that seeks to reduce working hours in the country.

The initiative, which reduces the working day from 48 to 40 hours a week, is authored by former President Álvaro Uribe, who presented this text while he was still part of the Legislative Assembly.

It should be clarified that this reduction of the working day does not imply any change in the salaries that the workers currently earn, that is, the employees would continue to earn the same but with less working time.

The reduction of the working day will be done progressively. In this way, when it goes into effect, the maximum weekly working hours will be 45; from the second year, they will drop to 42 and from the third, they will be 40.

This initiative was rejected by both businessmen and the Government, arguing that this is not helping to generate more jobs but to increase the cost of formalization.

Andi’s director, Bruce Mac Master, assured that the project “It does not contribute to the restoration and generation of new employment, quite the contrary. Make no mistake ”.

In a similar sense, the Executive ruled, which from the beginning had opposed the initiative and sent a negative opinion through the Ministry of Finance.

The bill still has two debates left to become a law of the Republic.
