América de Cali defeated Atlético Nacional 0-1, in the first leg for the quarterfinals in the 2020 Women’s League. The scarlets went from less to more and with a goal from the Venezuelan Joemar Guarecuco, the purslane who played with 10 players from minute 9, with the expulsion of Daniela Tamayo. While América also finished with one less woman, after Carolina Pineda was sent off at minute 23.

The first minutes of the initial stage were based on strong play and a couple of clear chances by the locals. America recovered the ball and tried to go out at speed. At minute 9, they expelled Daniela Tamayo from Atlético Nacional, after a clash with Gisela Robledo. Despite the claim of the pursuit players, the referee Jenny Arias upheld the decision.

The match continued with strong play and intensity in the center of the field. At minute 23, Carolina Pineda of America was expelled, after a grab on María Agudelo. Referee Arias was very rigorous with her sanctions.

Both teams sought control of the ball and the actions of the game, at times Nacional entered the rival area through set pieces, America held on and went out at speed, although the scarlets could not be precise in the last pass and often fell in the out of place.

In injury time and after a corner kick from the left side by Catalina Usme, Joemar Guarecuco reached the far post and at the exit of goalkeeper Katherine Tapia, the Venezuelan with a header put the American team in front . It’s the fourth goal in the league for the 26-year-old forward.

Despite holding the Atlético Nacional ball much of the time, the forcefulness was for America who was repeating the ‘dose’ of the previous year, when he won as a visitor in the first leg for the quarterfinals.

In the complementary stage, Nacional made a variation, Sara Pulecio left to make way for Leysy Pulgarín. America kept the same team and at minute 2, a shot by Gisela Robledo almost ended in the second scarlet goal. The locals tried to go out with the ball to the ground, but could not pass the middle of the playing field.

With the passing of the minutes, Nacional was relying on his game in the opposite goal. America had order in defense, and tried to come out with direct play. About minute 25, the visit began to make variations. Guarecuco almost scored the second after a great play by Wendy Bonilla, who had entered a few seconds earlier.

Averaging the hour of the meeting, the scarlets were the dominators of the ball and tried to take advantage of the spaces that Nacional gave in their defense. In the end, America takes advantage as it did last year through this same phase. The return match will be in Cali, next Saturday, from 3 in the afternoon.
