The woman accused of shooting to kill the man who had raped her assured that she did so in legitimate defense.
A strange homicide case in Alabama (USA) ended with a woman’s sentence of 20 years in prison. Identified as Brittany Smith, the woman shot a man who allegedly raped her, according to her testimony.
The case began in January 2008 in the town of Scottsboro. The woman assured a gas station operator that a man named Todd had sexually abused her. This, in order to know who it had been “if she appeared dead.”
Within hours, Todd was found dead at Smith’s home. The woman was captured at her home, according to Time. Allegedly, Brittany Smith’s brother went to confront the man who would have raped her, leading to a fight.
At that point, the woman allegedly drew a gun and shot Todd. According to the woman, this was done in legitimate defense to avoid the death of her brother or her own. Still, the Jackson County court dismissed this argument and, faced with the feasibility of a conviction, Smith pleaded guilty.

The lawyers were able to agree to a 20-year sentence, of which he will pay 18 months in a county jail. He will then spend another 18 months in home detention, and a further 19 months on probation. After these 4 and a half years, it will be reviewed if the woman must pay the rest of her sentence.
