The capital of the Atlantic will be “one of the key cities” in the investment strategy for USD1 billion announced by Wom Colombia, the new mobile operator owned by Partners, at the official launch in the country held yesterday.
Chris Bannister, CEO of Wom Colombia, told EL HERALDO that the investment in Barranquilla includes the installation of 151 network stations and between 12 to 18 stores throughout the city.
“Our plan in Barranquilla represents an investment between USD15 million to USD20 million, a figure that is going to double during 2021 ”.
The senior manager said that each construction of network stations generates 10 indirect jobs, while the creation of stores does the same with an average between 1.5 to 2.2 indirect jobs. “This is a good thing for city employment amid the pandemic,” Bannister added.
At the country level, the investment strategy contemplates a total amount of USD1 trillion in a term of four to five years and the hiring of 250 thousand people, of which about 1,200 have been hired to date, 95% from Barranquilla. In addition, the installation of about 800 antennas is stipulated by the end of 2020, a figure that would reach more than 2,000 in the next 2021. In the next few years, the goal is to reach 8,000 antennas in the country.
The CEO of Wom Colombia said that the objective they have set is help connect 20 million Colombians who currently do not have Internet access. “It is a good opportunity for us. We must close the digital divide and they deserve to be connected ”.
He specified that plans to replicate the model that became successful in Poland and Chile to the telecommunications subsidiaries that Partners groups, such as Play in Poland and Wom in Chile. “We believe that we can give Colombians a different alternative.”
