After intercepting one of his cell phone lines and following in his footsteps for 8 months, the Police this Saturday managed to locate and kill Venezuelan drug lord Bernardino Meleán Frontado, alias ‘Willy Meleán’.
Although his criminal gang committed crimes in Bogotá and in other cities, he had acquired and rented several properties in exclusive Santander areas.

In addition, he was releasing a false identity that allowed him to evade the controls of the authorities and three red Interpol circulars, for crimes that ranged from murder to extortion and aggravated theft of vehicles.

To this record, the intelligence officers of the Metropolitan Police of Bogotá added several crimes that the gang under their command, ‘Los Meleán’, had carried out in the capital, where micro-trafficking and prostitution were disputed with local gangs. EL TIEMPO revealed several of these homicides in June.
“The Meleán have a criminal record of more than 20 years in Venezuela. It is known that in that country they engaged in crimes such as extortion, kidnapping, homicide, firearms trafficking, drug trafficking, terrorism, aggravated theft and association to commit a crime, ”said Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo.

The condominium
For this reason, General Óscar Atehortúa, director of the Police, ordered that the uniformed men who were most familiar with the case – those from Bogotá – move to Sabana de Torres, Santander, from where they had heard ‘Willy Meleán’ speak with several of his relatives.

“He was in a luxurious hacienda in the rural area of Sabana de Torres and had his family in an exclusive condominium in Mesa de Ruitoque, near Bucaramanga”said one of the officers who participated in the operation.
“A band was made a siege that not only overlapped Colombia with the criminal actions it carried out in Venezuela. They began their criminal activity in Bogotá, but they took it to other parts of the national territory, ”added General Atehortúa.

Social networks and hitman
To find his whereabouts, social networks were also monitored, because the capo published his illicit activities, in order to generate intimidation and demonstrate his armed capacity.
In several accounts they uploaded videos in which they execute members of the also Venezuelan gang ‘Yeico Massacre’, with which they have an old criminal dispute.
“Within their confrontation they have registered approximately 30 homicides, 19 in the city of Bogotá”, admitted General Atehortúa.
EL TIEMPO established that a hit man, a member of ‘los Meleán’, agreed to point out the ranch where the capo was hiding.

It had stables, security cameras, a sports area and an arsenal in one of the luxurious houses of the place, whose owner is being located.
When the Special Operations units arrived, they were received by bullet from the hitmen. One of the officers was wounded in the leg and another in the shoulder. In parallel, seven search procedures were carried out; Three firearms, pistols, a revolver, a carbine and a shotgun were seized.

“We have clarified with this case at least 14 homicides that occurred in Colombia between 2019 and 2020, most of them victims of Venezuelan nationality, especially due to territorial disputes with ‘Yeico Massacre’. The neutralized subject was one of the ten most wanted in Venezuela, ”explained Atehortúa.
And he said that now they are going for the members and leaders of the ‘Yeico Massacre’ gang: “We are behind them. We are also conducting an investigation with our Office of the Attorney General of the Nation and we hope to have results in the next few days, ”said the general.
