Willingness to get vaccinated increases in Barranquilla

The debate on the will of citizens to be vaccinated against covid-19 is part of the public opinion of the country in the framework of the campaigns prior to the start of vaccination in February.

In that sense, the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) presented on Monday the results of its Social Pulse study, where they allocate a space for interest in vaccination against the current pandemic.

As a result of this study, DANE indicated that in Barranquilla 64.9% of the heads of household would be vaccinated against covid-19. This is the average result in the second half of the year, which is the period in which this statistical report began. In contrast, 35.1% indicated that they did not apply the immunization.

This places the capital of the Atlantic above the average that the total of the 23 cities of the country shows, which marks 63%. However, among the capitals of the Caribbean Coast, Barranquilla is located behind Riohacha (74.1%), Santa Marta (70.9%), Montería (67.6%), Valledupar (66.6%), Cartagena (65.7%) and only ahead of Sincelejo (60.3%).

At the national level. Regarding the national level, the percentage of heads of household who would apply the vaccine is 59.9%, while those who are not willing are 40.1%. This last indicator represents a fall of almost four percentage points, taking into account that for November the refusal of immunization was 44%.

“This is very telling because if the head of the household states that he does not want to apply it to him, he will surely drag that decision onto the other members of the household over which he exercises authority,” explained Juan Daniel Oviedo, director of DANE.

By sex

When segmenting by sex, women are the least willing to be vaccinated with 42.7%. Men, on the other hand, are the sex most willing to be immunized with 64.1%.

As Oviedo explained, the unwillingness to apply the covid-19 vaccine has had a slightly upward trend since July. He explained that in the seventh month of the year, 23.8% of male heads of household chose not to apply the vaccine, a percentage that grew over time until reaching a maximum of 39.8% last November and that it finally fell to 35.9% in December.

This same situation occurs in the female sex. In July the refusal reached 29.5% of the heads of the household and the peak was registered in November with 47%.

Risk of getting infected

According to this report, by December 72.8% of the heads of households in the 23 main cities stated that they feel concerned about catching the covid-19. This result is the sum of 31.9% who say they feel “a little worried” and 40.9% who mention being “very worried”.

When making an average sweep for the second semester of the year, DANE determined that 53.8% of the Barranquilla household heads are between “somewhat and a little worried”, while 37.8% say they are “very worried ”. Finally, 7.0% indicated that they did not feel worried about a future contagion by covid-19.
