The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday that COVID-19 deaths could double to two million if measures are not maintained to prevent the spread of the virus.

Worldwide, the pandemic has killed 985,707 since it broke out in China late last year. further 32.3 million people have contracted the disease, according to an AFP tally on Friday.

They are official figures that are undoubtedly well below the real ones, because only a part of the cases are diagnosed.

“One million is a terrible number and we have to think about it before we start considering a second million,” World Health Organization (WHO) emergency director Michael Ryan told reporters when asked how much more it could increase the number of deaths.

The United States, the most affected country in the world, exceeds seven million cases, more than a fifth of all patients, despite representing only 4% of the world population.

Meanwhile, Brazil, the most affected country in Latin America with about 4.7 million cases, was forced to suspend the famous carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro in 2021.
