The suspect exited the vehicle with a knife in his hand and did not respond to the warnings made by the officers present at the scene, after which the police officers shot him. Authorities reported that the suspect died at 1:30 p.m.

“One of our agents succumbed to his injuries,” Pittman said at a press conference. Shortly thereafter, the police identified the deceased officer as William F. Evans and indicated that he had been in service for 18 years. The other uniformed man is stable and out of risk.

At the moment the authorities do not consider what happened as an act related to “terrorism” and indicated that there is no ongoing threat.

US President Joe Biden said he was devastated by the incident. “Jill (his wife) and I are heartbroken after learning of the violent attack on a security checkpoint at the United States Capitol“he said in a statement.
