At 10:42 am (Miami time), (9:42 am, in Colombia) last Tuesday, September 1, the emergency services of the city of Miami Beach (United States) received a call that alerted them.
Following the call, the police found the famous Colombian-American DJ Erick Morillo, 49, dead in his home.
“The call was made from the artist’s home, on La Gorce Drive (…) The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear,” Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodríguez said at the time.

Death hypothesis
During his life, the Colombian-American had drug-related problems. In 2008 he missed a concert in Scotland after being arrested on cocaine smuggling charges. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.
In repeated interviews, he mentioned his struggles with addiction to ketamine – which even almost led him to lose an arm – and alcohol. In 2017, he told Skiddle that after going to rehab several times, he had gotten over it.
Because of that history, the Miami Herald said detectives are investigating whether he died of an overdose.

Reported for sexual assault
A month ago, Morillo turned himself in to police after facing allegations of sexual assault from a DJ, as reported by the Miami New Times, and for this he was arrested on August 6.
The events, local media reported at the time, occurred in December 2019, at the DJ’s home.
According to the victim, the man tried “to make various advances, some of a sexual nature,” but she refused.
As she felt drunk, she looked for a room to rest and the next day she woke up naked and with Morillo by her side, also naked.

He denied the accusations, but “the results of a rape kit tested positive for his DNA and he handed himself in, in the company of his lawyer,” said the ‘WPLG Local 10’ media, affiliated with the ‘ABC’ chain.
Who was?
Morillo was born in New York (USA), in March 1971, and lived in Cartagena for 4 years (from 4 to 10), as his mother was born there.
In ‘La heroica’ he studied at the Comfenalco school and then at the La Popa mixed school, where he made his first communion.
On social media, his fans described him as one of the “greats” of the House genre.

Between 2018 and 2020, he released a total of 12 productions. The most recent, ‘Afrotech’, was a collaboration with American artist Antranig.
He was a three-time winner of the Best House DJ at the DJ Awards and a three-time winner of the Best International DJ. His biggest success was being the creator of one of the simplest and catchiest songs in dance music: I Like Move it. It reached the eighth position in the 100 best of the Billboard magazine.
