The operation of the VAR was questioned in Colombian football after what happened in the 305 edition of the classic between Independent Medellin and National Athletic, which ended 0-0.

The video refereeing had already intervened in the first minute of the match, asking judge Mario Herrera to review a disciplinary action against Juan Pablo Gallego, from DIM, for a shot at an opponent. The judge decided to uphold his decision: he only admonished him.

But then, at minute 75, Alex Castro, Nacional player, headbutted James Sánchez, from Medellín, in an action very similar to the one he had Teofilo Gutierrez against Jarlan Barrera in the National vs. Junior, on March 12. On that occasion, referee Ferney Trujillo expelled Teo, who received a two-game suspension.

This time, Herrera paused the game while the VAR reviewed the action, but apparently the system stopped working. The actions were halted for more than six minutes.

The captain of Medellín, Andrés Cadavid, He repeatedly protested to Herrera and asked him to go and review what happened between Castro and Sánchez. “There is not, there is not,” the central told him.

While that was happening, the DT of Nacional, Alexandre Guimaraes, ordered Castro’s departure. In his place Deinner Quinones entered.

Ultimately, Castro received no punishment and play resumed with all 22 men on the field. The VAR returned to work a few minutes later.
