Chelsea was close to being scalded from his visit to the West Bromwich Albion field and scratched a tie at the last minute, coming back from a 3-0 against, in a game in which Kepa Arrizabalaga was a substitute (3-3).
Frank Lampard gave another wake-up call to the Spanish goalkeeper, after his mistake against Liverpool, and gave the start to Willy Caballero waiting for the Senegalese Edouard Mendy to be ready to play.
Chelsea, who had to recover from the defeat against Liverpool, had a horrible first half, in which all the defensive weaknesses of the team were noticed.
A few minutes into the game, Marcos Alonso made a mistake in a header, gave the ball to West Brom and the play ended with a cross shot from Callum Robinson that ended in Caballero’s goal. The nightmare did not end there.
Thigao Silva, starter in the center of the defense, slipped on the ball out, Robinson took advantage of the failure and faced Caballero for 2-0. With no time to recover, a fatal corner by the Londoners was finished off at the far post by Kyle Bartley for 3-0.
In the second half, Lampard took on Marcos Alonso and Mateo Kovacic, so that Callum Hudson-Odoi and César Azpilicueta entered, and these two made the two goals for Chelsea.
First Azpilicueta assisted Mason Mount so that he took a shot from the front that slipped next to the post, and then Hudson-Odoi combined a wall with Kai Havertz to finish defining inside the area with the interior.
In injury time and after a carom play in a corner, Mount took a shot that the West Brom goalkeeper failed to save well, leaving the ball dead for Tammy Abraham to push it into an empty goal. The VAR analyzed a play by Havertz’s hand, but in the end they did not cancel the play. Much controversy in the tie.
With this result, Chelsea adds four points in three games, while West Brom comes out of the pothole and after two league losses adds their first point in their return to the Premier League.
