The new director of the National Police, General Jorge Luis Vargas, explained that among the fundamental challenges of the institution is serving the public and vehemently persecuting the main drug trafficking leaders in the country.
On the morning of this December 23, in dialogue with BluRadio, General Jorge Luis Vargas gave his first statements as the new general director of the National Police. After being announced by President Iván Duque as commander of the institution, replacing General Oscar Atehortúa, Vargas announced the three axes of the route that he promised to promote: improve security, get closer to citizens and pursue the main leaders of drug trafficking in the country.

“The challenge we have in front of all Colombians is that they feel the security, that the Police be close to the citizens. We want Colombians to care for our institution. Likewise, continue the determined fight against drug trafficking throughout the country, in the different operations we have in Tumaco, Cauca and Norte de Santander, among other places, ”General Vargas explained in a radio interview.
The new director of the Police received the position last night, December 22, at a press conference cited by President Iván Duque. According to his first statements, he has already had contact with agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States, departments with which he promised to coordinate operations to fight crime and for the safety and coexistence of Colombians.
On the police abuse files registered in the 2019 National Strike, specifically the case of Dylan Cruz, and during the course of 2020, on the death of lawyer Javier Ordóñez at the hands of two CAI Villaluz patrolmen (Bogotá), General Jorge Luis Vargas assured that he is waiting for the investigations for both cases to be developed, both in the Prosecutor’s Office and in the Attorney General’s Office. “In the same way, our internal investigations have to be as timely as possible, to give the Colombians results,” he explained.
“The public and peaceful demonstration, as the Constitution says, is a right that all people have. The first thing the Police do is guarantee it. We are moving in all directions to protect those rights. When it is no longer a demonstration (it becomes violent), we also guarantee the rights of individuals and third parties. These people, we have it fully identified, are not protesters. Here are some criminals who cause disturbances and violence, there are more than 86 processes that are already open against those specific people, “he added in an interview.

General Jorge Luis Vargas was born in Bucaramanga (Santander) and is the son of Brigadier General (r) José Luis Vargas Villegas. According to the Police, Vargas is a professional in business administration and police administration, as well as a specialist in Conflict Resolution and Comprehensive Security. “His career is marked by a vocation for service and teamwork, in his time at the Metropolitan Police of Bogotá, the General Directorate, the Police Cadet School and the Police Intelligence Directorate,” says the institution.
Last night, at the press conference of the Presidency, Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo gave the new names of the shakeup in the Police. As General Jorge Luis Vargas was director of Citizen Security, Major General Carlos Rodríguez will assume such a vacancy. The position of Inspector General of the Police will be taken by Major General Jorge Luis Ramírez, until today in charge of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate. In the Antinarcotics Directorate, for his part, Major General Herman Bustamante, from the Carabineros Directorate, was placed. And in the Dijín will be Major General Fernando Murillo Orrego, currently the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Extortion Director.
