Tuesday, September 8, 2020. While Cristiano Ronaldo became the second footballer in history to overcome the barrier of 100 goals at the national level (he reached 101), in Europe he also entered history, on the same day, in the Old Continent.
Wbeymar Angulo scored a goal in Armenia’s 2-0 win over Estonia, becoming the third coffee soccer player to score for a European team. Alex Frigerio Payán -in the thirties- and Johan Vonlanthen -Eurocopa 2004-, were the other Colombians to score playing for Switzerland.
After five years playing for Gandzasar Kapan FC, where he has added 144 games (4 of them in the Europa League), Angulo had the opportunity to nationalize recently and received his first call to the Armenia team, thanks to Spanish coach Joaquín Caparros, who summoned him for the first two games of the Uefa Nations League, debuting against Macedonia and then scoring a goal against Estonia.
Happy for his 180 minutes as an Armenian, the Chocoano spoke with FUTBOLRED about his achievement, his history and what his football career has been.
“First I want you to tell me that I am not from Quibdó, because that is what they said in the broadcast according to what my family told me; I was born in Joví, a district of Nuquí, in Chocó ”, was the order of the front-line midfielder, who was born 28 years ago -March 8, 1992-.
Angulo Mosquera quickly recalled his time in Colombian football, in which he did not have much success, he played little and not even the U-20 rule helped him add minutes. “I started at Patriotas, then I went to Bogotá FC; Then I went to Huila, I was in the lower ranks of Nacional and there they loaned me to Alianza Petrolera: there I was promoted, but I played little because there were players like Rafael Carrascal, ”Wbeymar mentioned.
At the age of 21, he decided to go play. He went to Murcielagos FC of the Third Division of Mexico, where he gained experience and became friends with a Macedonian, who helped him to go to Armenia, where he has played since 2015.
At the moment of his goal, Angulo remembered his mother, Consuelo, his father, José de Jesús, and his three sisters: Kenia, Cindy and Georgina; just as he was moved by the pride that his daughter, Valeria, 7 years old, must be feeling. “Since I was a child, my mother always bought me footballs, she supported me a lot. She told me to study and I finished high school; But she also told me to pursue my dreams and today her efforts and the sacrifices I have made bear fruit, “recalled Wbeymar, who at age 8 left her town to seek her dreams.
He came to Armenia and spoke only Spanish. Now, he handles English, Armenian and Portuguese; she also understands and speaks some Russian and Serbian, all due to friction with her foreign colleagues.
“In Armenia life is calm, they are respectful, very strict in their way of life, they respect a lot. Here I have made a name, and coach Caparros gave me his confidence. He is an excellent coach, I have learned a lot, he transmits very important things to improve and works very well, ”said Angulo, who has a good mid-distance punch.
