Voters of ‘yes’ demand that Timochenko tell the truth – Peace Process – Politics

Recognized voters of the ‘yes’ in the plebiscite that at the time tried through the ballot box to endorse the peace agreements signed between the Colombian State and the then FARC guerrilla, they demanded their bosses not to beat around the bush and tell the truth before the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP).

The voices have been increasing to the extent that their omissions are known before this court in a frank breach of what was signed.

This Wednesday, for example, Blu Radio revealed sections of the statement made by Rodrigo Londoño, ‘Timochenko’, number one of that military organization when he was up in arms and current head of the Farc political party.

Before the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, Londoño Echeverri assured that it was not a policy and that it was not accepted by the guerrilla organization that children had to enlist. According to him, in the cases that were presented it was not a crime against humanity but “a crush.”

In effect, when asked if they committed the crime of recruiting minors, Londoño replied that they did not require documents to enter the ranks of the Farc, so it was difficult to know their age.

“I didn’t even know where they were baptized. It was not a requirement that they had to present an official document to check if they were the age they said or not “, he is heard saying in the audios released by the station.

Faced with this, the reactions of the opponents of the Agreement have been en masse. However, now we also hear the annoyance of those who precisely gambled for that alternative that sought to end the bloody and long armed conflict in the country.

The journalist and lawyer Valeria Santos, for example, a defender of the negotiated solution to the armed conflict, wrote on her Twitter account: “Timochenko should lose the benefit of his own sanctions and face a trial within the Peace Tribunal of the JEP for ordinary sanctions of up to 20 years in prison. The non-recognition of responsibility has to have consequences NOW ”.

Along the same lines, journalist Daniel Coronell stated: “The FARC must recognize its crimes, including recruitment and sexual abuse of minors. Without assuming those truths, the peace process will not have credibility. These concepts are similar to those raised by former president Juan Manuel Santos who has said in several recent interviews that the members of the Farc must tell “the whole truth.”

It seems to me an error, it seems to me an error on the part of some spokesmen of the Farc because others are recognizing them

The former president was categorical when evaluating those who are not telling everything that happened:

“It seems to me a mistake, it seems to me a mistake on the part of some FARC spokesmen because others are recognizing them,” Santos said a few days ago.

In fact, Colombia was already experiencing a controversy over the various abuses committed by the Farc, now turned into a political party, after some of its representatives, such as the second vice president of the Senate, Griselda Lobo, known as Sandra Ramírez, denied crimes of that nature.

According to former President Santos, who signed peace with the FARC in November 2016, those involved “They must go before the special justice of peace and there make the recognition and ask for forgiveness because if they do not do so, they lose their legal benefits” and they risk being judged by the ordinary justice.

“So there they are, as they say, playing with fire,” said Santos, who was president of Colombia between 2010 and 2018.

Alejandro Éder, another well-known ‘yes’ voter who was in Havana as a member of the negotiating team for the Colombian State, warned:

“You must acknowledge and clarify with the truth. If we do not do it through our own system of justice or transitional justice, the International Criminal Court will be able to enter there, and the ex-commanders of the Farc will be in a big mess ”.

In the case of the entry of children under 15 years of age, exceptions were the result of the circumstances, of the conditions

Londoño told the JEP that “the involvement of minors was sectional, that was not a policy or a decision to be able to recruit below that age.”

How did you know if the person was over 15 years old? Asked Magistrate Iván González.

“Trusting what they said,” replied ‘Timochenko’.

“In the case of the entry of children under 15 years of age, there were exceptions as a result of the circumstances, of the conditions, but it could not be established as a new norm or as to say: from now on they can enter. At least it should have, if it happened, it was done contrary to what was ordered by the conference, “he said.

Something that would have been contemplated in the plan for the 8 years after the seizure of power was to expand the number of men to 18,000 and have about 60 fronts. So? How to get such a number of combatants? Timochenko told the JEP that the objective was to make people fall in love with the guerrillas.

“Make the youth fall in love so that they will join the ranks of the guerrillas. That was the purpose when you went through the regions, because you talked and talked with the young people about what we were, what we were looking for ”.

And he was silent about the drama experienced by hundreds of families who have witnessed the enormous tragedy represented by the arrival of the guerrillas to their villages to forcibly recruit minors.

That explains the indignation of many YES voters who, now, are demanding that they respond with the truth.
